Chromatography Membranes and Resins

Chromatography is a widely used separation technique in the industry. It provides very high selectivity, versatility, and efficiency of separating molecules in a mixture. Therefore, it is one of the most important unit operations of downstream processes of biopharmaceutical products. These products need to be of very high purity as they are used to treat patients. Typical downstream processes comprise 2 to 3 different chromatography steps to achieve the required purity. Among the most widely used chromatography techniques are the following: 

Ion Exchange Chromatography

Ion Exchange Chromatography (IEX) is the technique used to separate molecules based on their electrical charge. Positively charged molecules will bind to a cation exchanger (CEX), and negatively charged molecules will bind to an anion exchanger (AEX).

Affinity Chromatography

Affinity chromatography is one of the most powerful chromatography techniques as a very target specific ligand is used for purification. This typically results in very high purity of the target.

 

Mixed-Mode Chromatography

In mixed-mode chromatography, two complementary chromatography methods are combined to enhance the efficiency of this purification step.

Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography (HIC)

Hydrophobic interaction chromatography is used to separate molecules based on the differences of their surface hydrophobicity.
