Real-Time Monitoring Of Membrane Casting Processes With SIMCA®-online

Mark Egorov, Manager of Process Data Analytics at PD Membrane Technologies of Sartorius BPS, will show how SIMCA®-online is used for real-time process monitoring in membrane production, which is one of the main businesses at Sartorius. Membrane production processes are very complex and require 24/7 process monitoring with 100% automation. At Sartorius BPS Membrane Technologies two different techniques are used: wet-casting (precipitation bath) and dry-casting (evaporation). Even though the mechanisms of formation of pore structure in polymer porous membranes are known, real-time control of membrane production processes still remains a challenge because of their complexity. There are tens or even hundreds of process parameters – potential influencing factors that need to be identified. Raw materials and casting solution properties add more complexity to the choice of right models for process monitoring. One more challenge is the need to meet the growing requirements of our customers with regards to product quality and consistency. The benefits of using SIMCA®-online for real-time monitoring of continuous processes will be shown using real life examples from membrane production.
