Simplifying the scaling process between bioreactors and the use of small-scale models
as a starting point for large-scale multivariate control.


[ Overview ]
The majority of bioreactor processes will require to be either scaled up or down: scaling up to produce larger volumes of product or scaling down to develop a representative scale down model which can be used for testing and troubleshooting of the larger scale. In both scenarios it is critical to ensure the scaling process is optimal and does not impact the key process parameters (KPP’s) or the product critical quality attributes (CQA’s). Miniaturised bioreactors, such as the Ambr® 250 are ideal candidates for developing scale-down models and establishing processes prior to scaling up, due to the high levels of automation, ease of use and large data sets generated. However, these smaller bioreactors can often be challenging to scale effectively and show comparability to the large scale.

In this webinar, David Seales, Product Specialist at Sartorius, will discuss the challenges associated with scaling from miniaturised bioreactors to larger scales and explain how a combination of bioreactor design, novel standalone scaling software and data analytics can be used to simplify the scaling process. Timo Schmidberger, Senior Data Scientist at Sartorius, will then discuss how the data sets from these small-scale models can be used to de-risk the initial large-scale runs with multivariate statistical process control charts (MPSC). Using this approach, a first guidance of expected process behaviour at scale can be obtained even before performing the first large-scale run. These tools can help simplifying the scaling process, saving development time and de-risking the transfer between scales.
