A Life Science Microcosm in the Heart of Germany's Capital

In 2021, 싸토리우스 opened a new, expanded office location at the site of the former Bötzow Brewery in Berlin with the goal of attracting talent in the German capital and to offer a working environment that fosters exchange and creativity. Take a look at the new 싸토리우스 office and how the Bötzow site has been developing over the past years.

Berlin's hotspot Alexanderplatz is in walking distance, the famous Brandenburg 게이트 just a few subway stops away. Small cozy restaurants and creative food trucks invite residents, passers-by, and busy office people for an urban lunch break or a casual afterwork get-together. Inside the building, a growing, international team have come together in a loft-like atmosphere. This is 싸토리우스’ Berlin office at the former Bötzow Brewery at Prenzlauer Allee 242.

Göttingen-based 싸토리우스 had already been present in the German capital with its spin-off LabTwin since the start-up’s foundation. In 2019, however, the company decided to significantly expand its presence Berlin.

“We are growing dynamically and recruiting experts from all over the globe. And while the 싸토리우스 headquarters is a very modern place that supports the flexible work styles of the future, we understand that moving to Göttingen is not for everyone. Berlin offers a great ecosystem for creative, tech-savvy people and with the office at Bötzow Brewery we have created a space complementary to the 싸토리우스 Campus in Göttingen,” says 싸토리우스 CEO Joachim Kreuzburg.

A Place for Collaboration

What made the search for a suitable location easier: Hans Georg Näder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of medtech company Ottobock, which is headquartered near 싸토리우스 in the south of Lower Saxony, acquired the Bötzow site in 2012 with the goal to develop it into a place of "responsible coexistence of culture and commerce".

On a side note: While 싸토리우스 is a tenant at Bötzow Berlin, Ottobock moved into the 싸토리우스 Quarter in downtown Göttingen.

The old brick building from 1885 was extensively renovated, and modernized in cooperation with David Chipperfield Architects. In addition to offices and residential spaces, co-working and cultural spaces, a beer garden and a boutique hotel are also planned. 

At approximately 3,200m² the 싸토리우스 office at the Bötzow site now hosts around 135 desks on three floors which can booked online by any 싸토리우스 employee. “The inside offers a genuine loft atmosphere characterized by a charming and open working environment that promotes communication and collaboration among the different functions and expertise,” says Joachim Kreuzburg.

In late summer 2021, finally, the first people moved into the new premises. Monika Fischler, who works as a Senior Business Development Manager at 싸토리우스 and lives in Berlin with her family, was one of them. “I appreciate the chance to work here in Berlin, it’s much more convenient for me. We have a young and international team here - there is kind of a start-up atmosphere, which is very inspiring,” she says.

In Good Company

The 싸토리우스 teams are in good company. Ottobock themselves have set up their Human Mobility business unit as well as several corporate functions and their Future Lab at the Bötzow site. Moreover, several digital start-ups are situated in adjacent buildings. 

Steffen Gloth is the Co-Founder and Head of Operations at LabTwin. He has been managing the Berlin location for 싸토리우스 from the first idea down to its realization.

“Being in touch with the other companies and start-ups on the premises is very inspiring. We know each other well, spend lunch breaks together, and even meet in the evenings for BBQ and other get-togethers,” he says. “It feels like a life science microcosm in the heart of Berlin.” A microcosm from which innovative ideas are bound to spring.
